New Zealand Warriors

Rugby League Australia - NRL Club Fan Site

The New Zealand Warriors are based in Auckland and wear a predominantly black playing strip. Traditionally, they field a huge, monstrous forward pack and slightly smaller backline. Travelling to their home ground is a formidable, intimidating, and daunting task to say the very least. They reached great heights earlier in the decade, playing a carefree, attacking style of rugby league which won them fans on both sides of the Tasman.

Unfortunately, the Warriors have failed to live up to the hype in some seasons but things appear to have turned the corner recently. They made the play-offs for the first time in a while during the 2007 season and I'm looking forward to them improving again in 2008. They have recruited some strong consistent players and retained some up-and-coming young stars for the future. Hopefully, they will be bringing the NRL trophy back to New Zealand in the not-too-distant future.

It would be great to see the Warriors do well in the NRL as it would help strengthen the position of rugby league in New Zealand, which would give the Auckland based club more players to choose from. The international game would also benefit from a successful and consistent Warriors outfit. I will never forget the way they played in 2002 and 2003. It was such a contrast from the defensively oriented style of the Australian teams. It was refreshing and I'd like to see it again please.
