Sydney Roosters

Rugby League Australia - NRL Club Fan Site

The Sydney Roosters are one of the founding clubs from 1908 and have managed to win twelve premierships. The club has produced some of rugby leagues most famous legends, including Dally Messenger and Dave Brown. Based in the Eastern Suburbs, the club has a reputation for being one of the most affluent in the competition. They have been accused of trying to 'buy' premierships in the past by luring big name players and in the late 80s and early 90s were known as the 'transit lounge' due to the 'holiday' approach taken by some star signings.

The Roosters started poorly in 2007, taking an eternity to post their first win of the season. Both their attack and defence seemed lacklustre at best. They were missing tackles when the opposition had possession and struggling to score tries when they had the ball. Their coach was sacked mid-season and replaced with former Roosters and Panthers champion Brad Fitler. The side seemed to improve immediately and strung together a very impressive winning streak before failing to qualify for the finals at the last hurdle.

If they can continue to improve in 2008 the Roosters could prove to be a thorn in the side of the more fancied teams. Rugby League is still the most popular sport in Sydney and this team has done a wonderful job at developing a strong following. Their stadium has been consistently packed with red, white and blue devotees during this decade thanks to having a successful team on the field more often than not. Maybe they will be lifting the NRL trophy above their heads and running a lap of honour sooner than we think.
