Canberra Raiders

Rugby League Australia - NRL Club Fan Site

The late 1980s and early 1990s were glory days for the Canberra Raiders rugby league club. They have struggled in recent years but have always managed to be competitive. They were able to prove some detractors wrong in 2007 after being named the team most likely to run last in the premiership. They were still in contention for a semi-final spot well towards the end of the season proper, showing glimpses of what the future holds with their youthful combination.

The Canberra Raiders were criticised for not recruiting talent for the 2007 season but managed to blood a lot of rookies. The experienced gained will be of great value in the years to come if they can hold on to these players. The Raiders are another side with a formidable reputation at home, with visiting sides glad to get away with a win if they can. No one relishes the long ride home from the nations capital after a loss. Spectators form a human wave of green, white, blue and yellow at every home game.

Who will ever forget Steve Jackson's try in the 1989 grand final? I won't. Many rugby league legends have played for the Raiders, most notably, big Mal Meninga. Mal was already a star when signed by Canberra, but managed to improve, representing Queensland at state of , origin and touring with and captaining the Kangaroos. They also managed to produce one of the greatest halves combinations of all time with New South Welshmen Laurie Daley and current Australian coach, Ricky Stuart.
