Penrith Panthers

Rugby League Australia - NRL Club Fan Site

The Penrith Panthers picked up the wooden spoon in 2007, at the end of a long disappointing season. It wasn't all bad though. They fielded a very young side who have now gained invaluable first grade NRL experience. With the competition being so level these days, they didn't finish too far away from a semi-finals berth either, despite coming last at the end of the preliminary rounds. There were glimmers of hope throughout the season and the team scored some of the most entertaining tries of the year.

The Penrith area has a very proud rugby league heritage and boasts the largest junior base (if I remember correctly). They are based at the foot of the mountains and play in a predominantly black playing strip, with flashes of blue and red. They have recruited very well for the 2008 season and I imagine their coaching staff would be more than happy with their current playing roster, which boasts a few internationals and other representative players of high pedigree.

The Panthers won their first grand final in 1991 in a very exciting game which provided a fairy tale ending to the career of club legend Royce Simmons. They have won a premiership this decade as well, and don't write them off as contenders to win another crown before it's over. Throughout Penrith's rugby league history, the club has probably been best known as a strong defensive team but has also provided the game with some very exciting and colourful attacking players as well.
