Rugby League in New South Wales
Rugby League is the number one winter sport in New South Wales and has been since around 1908. Sydney has been home to the premier competition in Australia since this professional code of football began at the beginning of the twentieth century. The best players from all over the world have been drawn to what is now known as the NRL and it is widely believed that if you can make it in Australia you can make it anywhere.
New South Wales has a long, proud and varied history in regards to the sport of rugby league. It is the most popular winter sport in rural areas as well as city centres. Country rugby league has produced many of the games stars and although many regions have been experiencing some financial problems of late, they will rise from the ashes and be champions again. I’d imagine there’d be more junior teams in New South Wales than any other state in the country.
